The reality TV community is mourning a shocking loss.
Andrew Jury, who starred on the first season of Married at First Sight New Zealand, died on June 27 while in custody at Mt Eden Corrections Facility in Auckland, New Zealand, his dad Roy Jury confirmed to The New Zealand Herald. He was 33 years old.
“I and Andy’s extended family and friends," Roy told the outlet in an interview published June 30, "are deeply saddened and bewildered by this distressing event.”
Andrew had been behind bars since April over charges including assault with intent to injure, willful damage and possession of an offensive weapon, according to The New Zealand Herald. On the day of his death, he was allegedly scheduled to appear in court, but none of his family had heard from him.
As Roy said, “It should have been a red flag when Andy stopped communicating with family and friends."
Andrew rose to fame in 2017, when he matched with Vicky Gleeson-Stokes on the first season of Married at First Sight New Zealand. The couple married but wound up splitting up after the show's finale.
Following his passing, Andrew's Married at First Sight costars, including Benjamin Blackwell, Brett Rennall and his wife Angel Rennall, shared a joint statement offering their "deepest condolences and love" to his family.
“We had the absolute pleasure of filming and participating in a show which leaves us intricately linked for a lifetime," read the statement, per The New Zealand Herald. “Despite his struggles, Andrew was always friendly and the life of the party during our shared experience and he really valued his time on the show."
Andrew's death is "not being treated as suspicious," a police spokesperson told the outlet, but the investigation is ongoing.
