Train derails at Illinois village; resident evacuation lifted

A train derailed in at an Illinois village on Thursday, promoting an investigation and temporary evacuations in the area.
According to local news, the incident happened in Matteson, about 30 miles from Chicago, and involved a train from the Canadian National Railway Company. Officials at the scene were examining a leaking train car.
“We’re going freight car to freight car to make sure,” Sean Howard, a village spokesperson, told the Chicago-Sun Times.
A CN representative confirmed with USA TODAY that an estimated 25 train cars derailed and were carrying "various substances." Officials have not reported any injuries or fires.
"One railcar containing residue Liquified Petroleum Gas leaked a limited amount of product. The product has since been contained, and there is no danger to public safety," the rep said in an emailed statment. "CN is working closely with local officials and thanks first responders for their work."
Matteson officials lifted evacuation order
The village initially announced a mandatory evacuation order for specific areas close to the site due to "a large-scale train" event, adding that residents should plan to be away long-term.
"Ensure you take any medication and supplies you may need with you," the statement continued. "Residents of Park Forest and Richton Park are encouraged to contact their local departments for further instruction."
In an update on Thursday afternoon, the Matteson Police Department lifted the order after securing the area.
"A precautionary evacuation was ordered but has since been lifted except for properties immediately adjacent to the site," CN said.
